Eco Web Hosting’s Sustainability Report for May 2022

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we write monthly reports to update our customers and readers on our progress. This May, we planted over 5,400 trees and funded two Gold Standard Projects.

Over 5,200 trees planted for our customers

For web hosting, Managed WordPress, and VPS packages purchased by our customers, we plant trees through Eden Reforestation Projects, where we plant in Haiti, Indonesia, and Nepal. For May, we planted 5,262 trees.

Through these projects, fruit trees are being planted in Haitian communities to help build up food security and local economies for towns, as well as rebuilding mangrove forests along the coastline. Mangroves are also being planted along the Indonesian shorelines, rebuilding forests that have been severely damaged by storms, clear-cutting, and tsunamis. And in Nepal, trees are planted in the mountains and grasslands to help reduce erosion and build biodiversity, as well as creating a buffer zone around the Chitwan National Park.

Over 50 trees planted for our employees

Every month, we also offset our employees’ carbon footprints by funding projects through Ecologi. This month, they changed how they plant trees for companies, which means we’ve dropped from our usual 121 to 51. However, we made up the extra by purchasing an extra 100 through Eden Reforestation Projects as part of our usual monthly purchase.

In their Madagascan tree-planting project, they planted 33 new mangroves to restore the coastline. In Kenya, they planted 15 trees to help restore the forests in the Mau region.  In Scotland, one hazel tree was planted for their UK forestry projects, helping to reforest around the country as well as provide support for local communities. And in Uganda, Ecologi works with Trees for the Future to help farmers create forest gardens, with two more trees added to our collection.

Plus, we received another lovely yellow mangrove in Madagascar from Tree-Nation to offset our website’s carbon footprint.

Funding wind farms in Mexico

Ecologi also sponsors Gold Standard projects for us, and this month, we helped to fund a wind farm project in Mexico. Despite having plenty of land perfect for wind farms, up until fairly recently, Mexico only produced 0.24% of its national power through wind farms. This amount has increased dramatically over the past decade, and these wind farms will not only produce clean energy for Mexico, but also fund healthcare and other community initiatives in the area.

Supporting the first ever wind project in Honduras

We were also absolutely delighted to be helping to support the first ever wind project in Honduras. As Honduras has shifted away from agricultural exports to more energy-heavy industries such as textiles, the need for power has increased. With over 50 turbines being installed, these will generate 345,970MWh per year, reducing emissions by nearly 227,000 tonnes.

Our monthly impact

Through these projects, we have reduced our carbon footprint by an additional 228 tonnes, making it over 5,570 tonnes since we’ve started. This is the equivalent of nearly 7,100 tonnes of rubbish being recycled instead of going to a landfill, over 10,250 metric tonnes of coal not being burned, over 8,700,000 litres of petrol not being used, and over 16.7 kilometres squared of sea ice being saved.

We’ll keep you updated every month with what we’re doing on our blog and on our Green Credentials page. We hope you’re as happy with the work that we’ve done as we are.
