Introducing our new VPS range

We are always looking to improve the products we can offer our customers, and we’re happy to announce that we’ve just launched our brand new virtual private server (VPS) range.

Our new range gives you increased connection speed, more storage space, fast NVMe drives, more operating system choices, and more choices for location — as well as a lower price! Our servers now start at just £7.99 per month, excluding VAT.

We also now plant trees for each server purchased, up to four trees each month, and you’ll get our monthly email about how many trees you’ve helped us plant as well as a link to that month’s sustainability report.

What is a virtual private server?

A VPS is a partition on a larger dedicated server, giving you private space on that server with many of the same benefits, such as root access, but without the cost of a dedicated server. On each dedicated server’s hard drive, there are sections portioned out for each VPS, and no other VPS user on that server can access your server.

Why would I want a VPS?

Having your own server is a great way to take full control of your hosting — you can set up your own software, programming languages, databases, and more, without hitting any restrictions that might come with a shared hosting package. Your website won’t be affected by other people’s websites either.

You can also do more with a server. Use it as file storage for your home network, run games on it, collect and organise data, really the choice is yours. You have full control over your server, and as long as it’s legal, we won’t interfere.

We should say, though, that a VPS isn’t for everybody. You do get more resources and more control, but you also have much more responsibility. With your server, you are in control of the operating system, software, and security, and responsible for making sure everything stays updated and working correctly. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, you could cause problems with your data, with the security of your server, or with your server’s connectivity.

If you wouldn’t feel comfortable with that much responsibility, or don’t have the time for the sharp learning curve that comes with owning a server, you might be better off with one of our Web Hosting or Managed WordPress packages.

What do our virtual private servers come with?

All our VPS have NVMe drives for storage, making them incredibly fast — much faster than standard SSDs or SATA drives. And each host server has local hardware RAID, meaning that there are multiple hard drives with your data, and when one goes, the others are there to keep everything running while we swap out the failed drive and re-sync it with the rest.

We also have fast connection speeds — from 250 Mbps up to 1 Gbps — and there are no bandwidth caps or charges. And if your server isn’t accessible to the outside world, you can still connect to it via out-of-band console access through your control panel.

You have the option of choosing your operating system as well. Currently, we offer CentOS7, CentOS8, and Ubuntu 20, with the possibility of adding more down the line. And if you need a control panel pre-installed, we have licences for cPanel/WHM available.

What’s cPanel/WHM, and what does it mean to have a licence on my VPS?

cPanel and WHM are two control panels that work together to provide a full web hosting platform. With WHM, you can run your server, including security, networking, and creating accounts, and with cPanel, you can set up websites for those accounts, complete with mailboxes, software, databases, and more.

cPanel and WHM are a convenient way to turn your VPS into a web server, and we offer licences for cPanel/WHM as 5-site, 30-site or 100-site. With these licences, you can only host up to that number of websites, and any more will require you to purchase a new licence.

Where can I have my server?

With our new servers, we’re also happy to announce that we now have new locations for our servers. When you order a server, you can have it in the following cities:

  • London, UK (our main data centre for our VPS range)
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Singapore
  • Warsaw, Poland

Can you move me from my existing VPS onto a new server?

If you’re on one of our previous virtual private servers or hosted with another company, you would be responsible for migrating your data onto your new server. However, if you’re using cPanel, and want to keep using cPanel on your new server, the cPanel Migration tool is an easy way to shift everything over.

What if I need something else from my server?

If you’re looking for something different in a virtual private server, please get in touch with our Sales team. We can look into your options and see if we can’t find a server that will work for you.

We hope you like our new server range!
