Eco Web Hosting’s Sustainability Report for August 2022

As part of our ongoing commitment to the planet, we publish reports that update our readers on our sustainability progress each month. In August, we planted 5,516 trees and funded two Gold Standard projects.

Over 5,300 trees planted for our customers

For each web hosting, Managed WordPress, and VPS package our customers hold, we plant trees through Eden Reforestation Projects. This month, we planted 5,334 trees in Haiti, Indonesia, and Nepal.

In their Haitian project, Eden Reforestation Projects is planting fruit trees in towns and villages to build up food security and the local economy and also rebuilds mangrove forests along the coastline. In their Biak Island project in Indonesia, they are planting mangroves along the shoreline and rebuilding forests severely damaged by clear-cutting, storms, and tsunamis. And they work on three projects in Nepal, planting trees in the mountains as well as the grasslands to help support biodiversity and reduce erosion. They are also creating a buffer zone around the Chitwan National Park, providing further protection for wildlife.

Over 150 trees planted for our employees

Every month, we also offset our employees’ carbon footprints by funding tree-planting and sustainability projects through Ecologi and also added an extra 100 trees to our customers’ collection for Eden Reforestation Projects.

This month, Ecologi planted 24 mangroves in their Marotaola, Madagascar coastline project, 12 trees as part of their forest restoration in the Mau region of Kenya and their Dundori Forest project, 7 new trees in Zambezia, Mozambique, 5 trees in their new Tanzania project, and one tree each in Morocco, Uganda, and in Scotland.

We also received 30 additional trees in Tanzania, thanks to Be Bunch signing up. Thanks! And we received another mangrove in Madagascar, thanks to Tree-Nation, to offset the carbon emissions of our website for the month.

Helping to fund wind power in South Africa

Ecologi also funds Gold Standard Projects for us, and this month, they’re helping to support the Longyuan Mulilo De Aar 2 North Wind Energy Facility, in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. This project aims to help South Africa move away from coal-powered energy sources and the 96 turbines will generate power helps to stabilise their power grid, giving more South Africans access to electricity.

Building solar farms in Vietnam

Ecologi is also helping to fund a solar farm in the Vinh Hao commune in the Binh Thuan province of Vietnam. Built on top of an existing salt farm, this 60-hectare farm will produce over 80,000 megawatts of electricity annually, helping Vietnam move away from fossil fuels while also meeting the increasing demand for electricity in the country.

Through these projects, we have reduced our carbon footprint by an additional 217 tonnes, making it over 6,200 tonnes since we started. This is the equivalent of over 7,900 tonnes of rubbish being recycled instead of going to a landfill, over 11,000 metric tonnes of coal not being burned, over 9,700,000 litres of petrol not being used, and nearly 19 kilometres squared of sea ice being saved.

We’ll keep you updated every month with what we’re doing on our blog and our Green Credentials page. We hope you’re as happy with the work that we’ve done as we are.
